5 Wellness Tips for Christmas

Christmas is such a special time of the year as we celebrate and remember the birth of Jesus Christ. But more often than not, this festive season brings on so much overindulgence, stress, and lack of self-control for many. Here are just FIVE of my tips (of course there are many more) that might help you to enjoy Christmas more this year.

  1. PLAN AHEAD - how many times have you been caught dashing through the shops on Christmas Eve, frantically trying to find the ‘perfect’ gift or gifts? Christmas is a time of giving, but not giving thoughtlessly or unnecessarily. Many of us get so stressed in this process alone. Start thinking ahead of what would be meaningful gifts, of course chocolates are always welcomed, but for those closer to you, think about alternative ways of gifting. Ask them their favourite causes or organisations, and maybe give there instead. Or encourage them to start or learn something new and gift them a voucher for a class of some sort, or learn something new together with them. For parties, gatherings etc, it’s always good to buy some of your favourite chocolates, essential oils or food items to keep on hand, gifts you know everyone would love so you can save time buying a gift each time; or if it’s a more personal gift, ask people who know them well to see what they might like. Or it might not be gifts you are stressing about, but cooking a meal. This is especially daunting if you are not used to cooking for large groups. So you need to ask for help. People are more than willing to contribute to meals by cooking a dish or ordering a dish, or if that’s not their strength, ask them to help with planning some games, or setting the table - when you ask ahead of time, people can plan their individual tasks and you can focus on other things. You just don’t want to be in a place where you are stressed, under pressure and not enjoying the process at all, and just can’t wait until Christmas is over. If you are, you need to think again about the choices you have, and make some changes. You will be surprised by how many people are willing to help, contribute and do their bit. If you are going to a Christmas party at someone’s home, offer your help and services, I’m sure that would be appreciated. Just simply plan ahead and ask, there will be much more joy and smiles all around, and more importantly you will be getting into the Christmas spirit!

  2. ME TIME - set aside time in the day for yourself to pray, meditate, exercise and/or relax. If you manage to guard this time, it will lay the foundation for a more balanced and self-controlled day. If you are finding yourself being overwhelmed and have no time, block yourself 15 minutes and do one of these things.

  3. HYDRATE & REST - these are two essentials to keep your mind, body and soul balanced and in good stance everyday, and especially for this season. Make up for it quickly if either of these things are being neglected.

  4. EVERYTHING IN MODERATION - there is just so much on offer this season. Whether it’s food, drinks, parties, gifts, we can all start by pacing ourselves, and appreciate the provision of whatever that is on offer, but in moderation. When you realise just how much life is a choice, everything starts to change and will be better.

  5. QUALITY TIME with family, friends and loved ones. Yes the food, festivities and activities are fun and important, but what is even more so is quality time spent with your loved ones and people you cherish. Spend this time playing fun games, talking, eating and making beautiful memories together. Understand the true HOPE, JOY and PEACE that Christmas brings.

This is not a huge list, but I hope you can at least work on these 5 things to keep you stress free, relaxed and joyful this season. I hope your Christmas this year will be a special and meaningful one. God bless xx
